The Bertholy Method: The Golden Exercise
Compression is a current buzzword in the world of golf, but the concept itself isn’t new—only the verbiage is. Paul Bertholy, Life Member of the PGA and my mentor, recognized this as early as the 1950s. HIS drill, first introduced nationally in Golf World in 1969, remains one of the fastest ways to increase compression.

Become proficient at it and, almost inexplicably, you’ll first notice an increase in iron distance, along with a sharper, more solid impact sound. How long will it take? That varies based on your own kinesthetic acceptability factor. Spend no more than 15 minutes at a time working on this drill. You’ll know when success is approaching.
